Italy Travel Guide 2026: Rome, Florence & Amalfi for Indians
Italy — art, history, pasta, and some of the world's most beautiful coastlines — is a dream destination that delivers on every expectation. This guide covers the essential Italy experience for Indian travellers.
Visa: Schengen Italy
Apply at VFS Italy centres in India. Italy's Schengen applications have a strong approval rate when documents are in order. Apply 4–6 weeks before travel.
Getting to Italy from India
- Direct: Air India flies Delhi–Rome (~9.5 hours)
- Connecting: Emirates/Qatar/Etihad via Gulf (~14–16 hours)
- Flights: ₹45,000–85,000 return from major Indian cities
Rome (3–4 Days)
Ancient Rome
- Colosseum + Roman Forum + Palatine Hill: Book combined ticket online at coopculture.it (€18). Go at opening time (9 AM) to avoid queues.
- Pantheon: Free entry. One of the best-preserved ancient buildings in the world — the hole in the ceiling (oculus) is 9m wide.
- Trevi Fountain: Go at 7 AM before the crowds. Toss a coin — Roma tradition guarantees your return.
Vatican City (Half Day)
- St. Peter's Basilica: Free entry. Climb the dome for views (€8).
- Vatican Museums + Sistine Chapel: Book months in advance at museivaticani.va (€20+). The Sistine Chapel ceiling by Michelangelo is more breathtaking in person than any photo suggests.
Food in Rome
- Pasta Cacio e Pepe: Cheese and black pepper pasta — naturally vegetarian
- Pizza al taglio: Sold by weight from bakeries — vegetarian options always available
- Supplì: Fried rice balls with mozzarella
- Gelato: Get it from a gelateria artigianale (artisan shop) not a tourist trap (look for natural-coloured gelato in metal tubs, not bright-coloured peaks in plastic bins)
Florence (2 Days)
The cradle of the Renaissance.
- Uffizi Gallery: Home to Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Michelangelo's Doni Tondo. Book at uffizi.it (€25). One of the world's greatest art collections.
- Accademia Gallery: Michelangelo's original David statue. Book at gallery.accademia.it (€16+).
- Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore): Brunelleschi's dome is a masterpiece of engineering. Climb the dome for views (book separately at museumflorence.com, ~€30 combined pass).
- Piazzale Michelangelo: Panoramic viewpoint over Florence — perfect for sunset photos.
- Ponte Vecchio: The medieval bridge with jewellery shops. Walk across at golden hour.
Day trip from Florence: Pisa (1 hour by train, €15 return) — Leaning Tower, Piazza dei Miracoli.
Amalfi Coast (2–3 Days)
One of the world's most spectacular coastlines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Base yourself in: Positano (most scenic, most expensive), Amalfi town (central), or Sorrento (less touristy, better transport links).
Getting there from Naples: Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento (€4), then SITA bus along the coast or ferry.
Top experiences:
- Ravello: clifftop town with gardens, classical music festival, views over the sea
- Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei): iconic hike above the coast with breathtaking views
- Boat trip: Rent a small boat from Positano to explore sea caves and grottos
- Pompeii: 30 min from Sorrento — the Roman city buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD. Extraordinary and haunting (€16).
Venice (2 Days)
- St. Mark's Square & Basilica: Free entry to basilica; pay for the museum upstairs
- Grand Canal: Take the vaporetto (water bus) Line 1 from Santa Lucia station — €9.50 for a single trip (worth it for the views)
- Rialto Bridge & Market: Best in the morning
- Doge's Palace: €16 online, includes Bridge of Sighs
- Murano Island: Glassblowing demonstrations, free to watch
Italian Food for Vegetarians
Italy is a paradise for vegetarians (not vegan):
- Pizza Margherita — tomato and mozzarella, everywhere
- Pasta Pomodoro — tomato-based pasta (specify "senza carne")
- Pasta Pesto — basil, pine nuts, parmesan
- Arancini — fried rice balls
- Bruschetta, caprese, focaccia — standard starters
